Types of SASSA Grants in South Africa

SASSA introduces different social grants for different types of people, like children, the disabled, old age and others. Each SASSA social grant’s eligibility criteria, amount, and duration are different. Types of Grants and Their Criteria

Among 18 million South Africans, SASSA distributes various types of grants to reduce poverty. 

  • Social Relief Distress

1. Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant

During COVID-19 South African government introduced the SRD Grant, whose basic aim is to provide financial support to those people who were badly affected by COVID. Every month, people receive R370 in their bank accounts, by Cash and other points.

  • Due to medical reasons, people are unable to work.
  • Loss of a household breadwinner
  • Enrollment in an institution for at least one month
  • Affected by a disaster not declared as such by the government
    • Applications must be submitted within 12 months of the breadwinner’s death.

2. Child Support Grant (CSG)

  • The CSG supports primary caregivers of children under 18.
  • Caregivers must be at least 16 years old, provide for the child’s basic needs, and may include non-biological parents.
  • The grant is R530 per month, or R780 if you include the additional R250 top-up.

Types of SASSA Social Grants

3. Care Dependency Grant (CDG)

  • The CDG aids caregivers of children under 18 with permanent disabilities who require continuous care.
  • Valued at R2190 per month, this grant is designed to alleviate the financial burden of professional care.
  • Foster parents or primary caregivers are eligible unless the child resides in a government institution for more than six months.

4. Disability Grant (DG)

  • The DG, valued at up to R2190 per month, supports individuals aged 18-59 unable to work due to physical or mental disabilities.

5. Older Persons Grant

  • This grant, available to individuals over 60, offers financial assistance based on income and assets.
  • Valued at R2180 (ages 60-75) or R2200 (ages 75+), it is unavailable to those in government institutions.

6. Foster Child Grant (FCG)

  • Children in foster care may receive the FCG, valued at R1180 per month.
  • Foster parents must provide a court order and ensure the child resides in South Africa.
  • The grant can extend until age 21 if the child remains in an educational institution.

7. War Veterans Grant (WVG)

  • The WVG, valued at R2210 per month, supports veterans of the Second World War or Korean War who are over 60, disabled, or indigent.
